How many of these people work for you?
JUST 16 per cent of employees, on average, can be described as “brand ambassadors”, says a new report.
These, says WellKom, are those who encapsulate and embody the vision and ethos of the company brand. They are forward thinking, motivated, energised and, most importantly, are well. They consistently sell the organisation, offering exceptional customer service and connect with the customer. This is because they are engaged as well as having the physical and mental capacity to make discretionary effort when the opportunity arises.
They are able to thrive on change and handle life’s ups and downs both at work and outside with a positive, optimistic, “can do” attitude which is the foundation for a high performance culture.
Wellkom’s MD, Anthony Phillips, offers this Q&A:
Q How many people turned up for work every day in the last 12 months?
A A range of 30-45pc, perhaps, but 70pc-plus is possible
Q What makes these people different from, say, others who have a lot more time off?
A People with high attendance have much better personal wellness management. They score generally above the norms for all main dimensions of wellness; have a very different job quality index and performance/productivity index score compared with those with low attendance
Q How many people at work today are going through the motions or not working to their maximum? (Note: “presenteeism”, meaning coming to work when unwell.)
A Before the credit crunch, it was estimated (The Work Foundation and WellKom) that one in four people at work were under-performing due to sub-optimal wellness. This has probably since increased. Mind estimates that one in 13 people are on anti-depressants. Then look at the number of people who are: overweight; complain of back pains; get dehydrated, etc. It all adds up.
Q how many brand ambassadors do you have?
A Tough if you think, like many employers, that turnover has slowed due to the recession. You’ll have to grow your own.
Wellkom’s report places people into these averages: green (brand ambassadors): 15.8pc; amber (could over time go red or green): 56.2pc; red (opposite of brand ambassadors): 28pc.
